Halloween Fayre and Open Day!!!

Hello!!! Sorry for the huge gap - we are so busy over at Loving Hands website and forum ( www,lovinghands.org.uk - forum link is at top right hand corner of the web page) the forum us incredibly busy now with new members joining every day - over 1200 on the forum now and we have over 2600 members in total - it is wonderful!!!

This year has seen LH HQ redecorated and sorted out with shelving etc and we have built a new storage shed out back (now officially known as 'Gaffers Den' ) so we have more room for all the items coming and going through here now ;0)

Soooooo - To service this ever growing community we are having a fundraiser at the end of October ;0)

Loving Hands arfe having their first ever - HALLOWEEN FAYRE - it is perfect timing for Halloween and will beat all the other Christmas Fayres to the punch ;0) We will have lots of stalls and invite some other people in to do stalls to sell things people will maybe want for Christmas presents as well.

There will be the usual Raffle, Tombola, Cake and Candy, Handicrafts, Teas etc and we will have fun things for the kids too - a fancy dress contest, a best carved pumpkin contest, bran tub (with scary things in it so they have to feel past the spiders, skeletons, bats etc to find the parcels ;0) etc, etc.

Hopefully it will be a really fiun day and we will raise lots of money for Loving Hands - I want to get in loads of inks, stationery, stamps etc to keep us going for the next wee while ;0)

BUT - it doesnt end there!!! Oh no - we are then having a High Tea at the Halfway House in Kingseat at 7pm so that members can have a lovely evening and a relaxing chat after the Fayre.

BUT - it doesnt end there!!!!!!!! Oh no - we are then having an open day here at HQ on the Sunday from 10am to 4pm so that any members still around can come and see the new HQ and Gaffers Den and help themselves to lots of goodies from the stash in the Den ;0)

So it is all very exciting! Lots happening and lots to keep us all busy. Here we go again - another year and we are now over 1600 members here at Loving Hands! Brilliant! There is going to be an article about my own experiences and Loving Hands in Yours magazine on the 25th January so hopefully that will trigger even more members to join us!

We now have groups in Kelty, Carrickfergus, Stonehaven, Portsmouth, Glasgow West, Cardiff, Peebles and Warwickshire! Who knows - this might be the year we get a group near you!

Sadly my last surgery failed as well. I went in and had the balloons fitted in october, they waited 3 weeks before they began filling them and did it ever so slowly but my stupid body wouldnt play ball and I got anothe rinfection and two of the balloons decided to burst through the skin again. Result was I ended up back in hospital having the balloons taken out again anSd IV antibiotics to clear up the infection. Never mind - once all these new wounds have healed we will hopefully try again - maybe third time lucky!

We are all looking forward to the new challenges being posted on Loving Hands forum on 30th January. Wonder what I will have in mind for everyone this time ;0)

Scotland's Knitting Only Show will be on May 14th from 10am to 4pm at Perth Racecourse again. This year we are trying to make it very much a Loving Hands get together. A lot of the ladies are planning to book into the Travel Lodge at Perth or the Huntingtower Lodges just along from there. We Iill arrange a block booking for dinner at the Glover Arms on Friday and Saturday nights so everyone can have some fun together as well. Looking forward to it already - I am planning to have nice new Loving Hands badges made before hand so we can all wear them to identify one another much easier ;0)

Oops I did it again!

Ooops - I did it again folks - so sorry I keep forgetting about this Blog here because it takes all my time to keep the reprobates on the Loving Hands forum out of mischief. Please go have a look at the web page lovinghands.org.uk and if you click the link to the forum at the top right hand of the page you will be able to keep up with what we are doing from there.

The current challenges are;-

Pegasus Children's Trust - we are busy helping out author of Street Kid Judy Westwater's charity to helkp street kids in Africa - we are making clothing, toys, school uniforms etc for these lovely youngsters to help give them a better shot at a decent life.

We are also making hundreds of Teddies for Tragedy - some for Orphans in Cambodia and some for street kids in Uganda.

The last part of the current challenge is - once again - our shoeboxes for Blythswood. We made 200 last year so are hoping to achiee more than that this time round.

So you see we are very much here and very, very busy.

We have now raised enough money to have the new HQ built at the bottom of my garden (or glorified large garden shed as my DH says ;0) Just waiting for the planning permission to come through so we can build it and get the room in the house back - at last!

I am still waiting for the next stage in my reconstruction - the plastic surgeons are planning to put 4 tissue expanding balloons into my scalp, forehead and the side of my neck and spend 6 to 18 months slowly filling them with saline to gain enough new skin to rebuild my face. Once they come out the reconstruction ops can take place and after that they will insert clips into the bone around the eye socket so they can attach a new artificial eye/eyelid/eyebrow etc. So lots of fun and games to be had over the next 3 to 4 years in order to make me look good again! (Of course my lovely family tell me I look good anyway - I have booked them all into the opticians as a matter of extreme urgency ;0)

Right - best try to get some sleep - this is the worst side effect of my accident - I have been suffering from terrible nightmares since I woke from the drug induced coma they put me in. Sadly that is the one thing I just can't seem to shake off - everything else is just water under the bridge, que sera sera - the annoying thing about the bad dreams is that I know it was all just my mind running wild due to the cocktail of drugs they were pumping into me but somehow I can't find the peace of mind to get a good night's sleep! Never mind it gives me lots of time to work away on here or do some knitting and watch tv ;0)

2010 - Would you believe it!

Well another year has almost passed before I have got around to updating this Blog - sorry folks!!! Keeping up with the forum at http://www.lovinghands.org.uk/ is a daily job that needs to be done or everyone gets all worried about me - bless their cotton socks xxx We are now over 1000 members and have five groups on the go (Kelty, Carrickfergus, Portsmouth, Stonehaven and a new one starting in Glasgow West on the 17th June !). Hopefully we will get some more before too long as well.

We are almost ready to build our new HQ (or a large shed style workshop at the bottom of my garden to be less grand !) it is to be 12 ft by 18 ft and will give me back space in the house - thank goodness! Our donations are flooding in daily now so it is a labour of love to keep them sorted, photographed, . listed on the forum and repacked and then sent off to our charities (who are all extremely grateful for all we send them). We are now sending to Blythswood Care, Linda MacDonald Foundation, Scotia Aid, SANDS, Hope4Children, Hope & Aid Direct, Algerian Action, UK maternities, Boobs for Breastfeeding (Tommee Tippee), Animal Shelters, Funsani orphans project and more. (Our latest challenges include coats for chickens and knitted donkeys to help raise funds for the donkey sanctuary!!!).

We also had a wonderful day out at Scotland's Knitting Only show which was up at Perth Racecourse again - there were over 20 members there this year and we all grabbed loads of lovely bargains! This was the third time they had had this and we have been to them all - not to be missed if you want a chance to meet up with other Loving Hands members and buy lots of great knitting bargains!

As for me - my wounds are healing very slowly so they are soon to begin my reconstruction. They are going to take me to Livingstone and there put 4 'balloons' (tissue expanders) under my skin - two on top of my head, one in my forehead and one in the side of my neck. These will be gradually filled with saline solution over a period of 6 to 12 months to allow the surgeons to harvest enough new skin to use to rebuild my cheek and close the gap in my hairline. This is apparently a slow, painful and very uncomfortable process with lots of risks and worries along the way but it will be worth it in the end I am sure. My family and local members are standing by ready to make sure I do not try to do too much during this phase as I need to be pretty much sedentary and protect the balloon filled areas at all costs - Suzanne and Rab (DH) have decided I should be wrapped in cotton wool and then bubble wrap so that if I fall I will be well protected and the sound of the bubbles popping will alert them to come and pick me up again !!!!! You see what I have to put up with !

Sadly this will also mean that I will be unable to go out to my daughter's primary to give knitting lessons till this is all over - I do love those little treasures and they work away making blankets for the kennels amidst lots of very bad joke telling and song singing - we do have fun (and the first class informed me that it was a 'life changing experience' ! ;0)

Once the eye socket has completely healed they plan to drill in and place clips to hold in a new prosthetic eye complete with eyelid and eyebrow so it should be much nicer and more secure than the original plan of having one that I had to stick on with medical grade glue each day (didn't like this idea as I had a vision of a very hot day and the eye dropping off into the potatos in Asda and causing some unsuspecting old lady to drop dead with fright in front of me - I definitely do not want to be responsible for that !!!!).

OK enough of the gory stuff - just had to update those of you who have been anxious for news.

So here we are - gloriously sunny again and I am going off this afternoon to Jenna's sports day at school. We are also having a weekend away on the 18th to Wemyss Bay (one of the those Sun newspaper cheap breaks - great bargain!) and on the 2nd of July we are off for a 10 day holiday which will involve crossing the border again so I am not telling anyone where I am going till I get there (don't want to tempt fate as the last time when I booked a holiday cottage in Staffordshire to visit Alton Towers I had my accident and didn't get!).

Heatwave!

Well we are basking in a heatwave at the moment - we are not as bad as some of our colleagues south of the border but it is bad enough for me to have to hide from it :0( Shouldn't moan the kids are all outside in Jenna's huge paddling pool (all the kids in the street are there I think from the sound of all the hilarity!) the school holidays have just started so hopefully we will get nice weather for a week or so for them to have fun in the sun.

Spending today boxing up another load of wonderful donations to send out - having been doing it monthly for the last wee while we are going to have to cut down to doing it weekly as our numbers keep growing - can't believe how succesful it has all become - thanks to all of you wonderful members with your big hearts xxx We have a never ending stream of parcels and boxes coming in here all the time keeping Kelly and I ever so busy sorting, photographing, listing and then packing up for the outward journeys.

Todays boxes will be for - A breast feeding support group in Milton Keynes, Avril at Tommee Tippee, Nia at Friends of the Animals rtc in Wales, Algerian Action, Scotia Aid, Prem and burial items for Abi our group leader in Portsmouth, Wool for a new group of knitters, several maternity wards and Sands.

We will also be packing up blankets and pet beds to take to Fife Cat Shelter and Perthshire Abandoned Dogs Society. Such a hive of industry here :0)

Miss Jenna had her birthday on Saturday and got a lovely wee kitten - called Toffee - ever so cute ;0)

Right - had a breather so back to packing boxes - better be careful though - I keep bursting open my shoulder and it meandsmore rows from the wound nurses when I go in to the hospital to get the dressings changed :0)

Knit in Public Day 2009

Here we are again - been a long while since I posted on this Blog - so much work to do over at Loving Hands Forum that I never seem to remember to put any updates on here - sorry.

As you will see by the photos I have posted this time we are still making lots of knitted breasts for breastfeeding classes in UK and I have still a long way to go in my healing so I am under wraps with bandages and a selection of very cool wigs (all the way from China courtesy of ebay :0) to keep me looking good for the public.

Knit in public day this year is next Saturday 13th June and we are all going to be having a Knitpic in the park again. This year we will be in Pittencreiff Park in Dunfermline from 1 to 4 pm. The plan is to meet up between the Pavillion and the childrens play areas or if it is wet in the Pavillion itself. Bring your knitting or crochet, something to sit on and a picnic - the coffee bar should be open in the Pavillion so you can get teas, coffees and snacks from there too. There is also a bar in the pavillion that sells drinks and hot meals as well.

Hoping we get a really good turnout this year. We are now over 600 members from all over the world and I know that some of our outlying members are going to join us from places like Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen so it should be a lovely day.

Where does the time go?

Where on erth does the time go - can't believe I haven't updated this Blog site for sucha long time. Still spending lots of time on Loving Hands website and keeping the forum running smoothly there - we now have over 500 members at Loving Hands and have been making hundreds of items for the variou scharities we support :0)

We have been making things for :- Blythswood Care, Linda McDonald Foundation, Teddies for Tragedy, BISS, Feed the Children, Save the Children, Trauma Toys for UK ambulance and fire crews, Blankets for Animal Shelters, Teddies for the Kenyan Orphans Project and Shelterboxm blankets for a Zambian Aids Hospice, Squares for the Soweto Comfort Club Knit a Square project, Baby clothing (both prem and newborn sizes, blankets and burila items for UK maternities and have recently added Algerian Action to our list of charities we support. We do get about a bit and are kept ever so busy.

Currently our stitchers are making bags to save baby Puffins :0) It makes us smile to think we are helping them too :0)

Hopefully there will be a contigent from Loving Hands at the Scottish Knitting Only show at Perth Racecourse on Saturday 9th May from 10am to 4pm - some of us were at the first one last year and it was a fabulous day - hopefully as long as I am not in surgery or recovering I will be there again!

My accident happened last July - I slipped in the bath, cut my cheek and had to go get it stitched. 30 stitches later I was home and packing for our holidays. The next day it was getting swollen so doc said to put ice on it which I did. Later the saem day it was swelling even more so we went back to A&E and were given antibiotics and sent home again. By lunchtime the next day my head looked like an elephants and I was struggling to breathe because of the swelling - back to hospital - this time in an ambulance. The upshot of it was I had contracted necrotising faciitis (the flesh eating bug) in the wound on my face. Over two days and three surgeries they removed my forehead, left side of my face and temple, the whole of my left eye and my left cheekbone. I was in a coma for three weeks during which time I suffered from terrible drug induced nightmares - don't understand how anyone could deliberately put themselves through that for fun -and finally woke up in August :0)

Since then they have rotated part of my scalp to make a new forehead for me and covered my face with part of the skin from my leg. I am goin in soon to get a pedicle flap done (they will raise part of my chest with skin and muscle, lay it back and leave it for about 6 weeks to develop it's own blood supply and then they will re-open my cheek and attach the flap to my face leaving me attached to my chest for a further 6 weeks to make sure it takes properly. The final step will be to seperate the chest and face. Hopefully this will give me a much more natural looking cheek.

Later on they will give me a prosthetic to wear with an artificial eye, eyelid and eyebrow and this will cover the fact that my cheekbone is missing and the gap at my temple.

Finally they will put a balloon under my scalp to stretch the skin so they can eventually give me a new hairline and I can stop wearing wigs.

It is going to be a long slow process but worth it in the end. I have never been down or felt sorry for myself - far too busy with my family and loving hands - I count my blessings every day as I was ever so lucky to survive the bug with it being so close to my brain - I can still do almost everything I could do before, work, drive, run my group, go shopping etc. :0)

Right - back to work now - we will be having our World Wide Knit in Public Day knitpic in the park this year in Dunfermline. Just waiting to get the date etc so we can get it properly organised. Hoping to get lots of our members together that day - praying for good weather :0)

World Knit in Public Day

Soooo Sorry that I have been ignoring this Blog for such a long time - it just seems there aren't enought minutes in the day and with the website going strong www.lovinghands.org.uk and the Forum demanding my constant attention to keep it up to date I am afraid I have just not taken the time to pop over here and update.

Just wanted to let you all know that Loving Hands will be hosting an event to celebrate World Knit in Public Day on the 14th June.

We are having a KNITPIC IN THE PARK ! (and I don't mean an excuse for the narrow minded to start knitpicking! I mean a lovely day out for all fibre crafters to meet up and knit, crochet, sew or whatever in the park while we have a lovely picnic!),

We are meeting up in Beveridge Park in Kirkcaldy from 12 noon to 3pm. You will easily spot us we will be the crazy bunch of Knitters (and maybe a few nutters as well :0) by the big Gazebo in the park!

Bring along a chair or picnic blanket, some picnic goodies and of course whatever you are going to work on! Don't worry if you don't know how yet we will have materials with us and our lovely ladies would be happy to show you how to knit or crochet while you are there!

Let us hope that it is a nice day and we get a great turnout! (As far as I know we are the only one listed for this event in Scotland at the moment!).

Easter Challenge and Different Mediums!

Hello Again!

Just an update for you all - hope you have all been watching the Forum as that is where all the daily news is posted and you can get to know all the other members! (Link to the Forum from the website www.lovinghands.org.uk ). Hopefully more of you will be brave enough to sign in on the Forum and start posting the occaisional comments - we do love to get to know everyne and see what we are all up to!

The Easter challenge is going fantastically - Fridays countdown on the Forum was:-

Boobs 52
Toys 63

We are doing brilliantly and we still have till Easter Sunday to go (23rd March this week so another 6 weeks to watch those totals go soaring way over what we asked for - keep up the good work girls!).

After my search for members using different mediums we have now got some more sitchers on board and have had interest shown by some machine knitters - this is fantastic as we will be able to expand our reach and help more people and animals with the help of these lovely ladies! Suzanne is going to get me started off with my newly acquired sewing machine on Monday as she has cut out some Angel Pockets so she can show me how to assemble them properly - I am really looking forward to the challenge (it will never take over from my knitting obviously but it will be a great way to make sure we have enough Angel Pockets and Burial Gowns for all the maternities on our lists). Arlene from UK Sewing has now decided to join us as a stitcher as well and hopefully some of her stitching friends might be interested as well - thank you Arlene - I will pass all your details on to Suzanne on Monday and the two of you can have a chat about what we need :0)

So it is definitely full speed ahead for Loving Hands! What a great start to the year! We have also been mentioned not just once but twice in the new edition of Let's Knit magazine so hopefully that will bring in some new members too!

We now have 100 members from all over the UK and every one a gem :0)

Knitting, Crocheting and Sewing for Charity!

Well guys we are now officially Knitting, Crocheting and even Sewing for charity! As well as all of our usual knitting and crocheting we have now got some lovely ladies who can stitch beautiful burial gowns and convert blankets into animal bedding! All very much needed skills - especially for our group as we grow and try to help as many people as we can :0)

We have had a lot of requests from our maternities this week - it has been great emailing and chatting with the midwives and finding out what they particularly need in each hospital. We have had a request for two 2ply baby shawls from one hospital - I don't know if any of you feel you have the time to spare (OR THE PATIENCE) to create these beautiful things. If you do let me know - we would happily supply the patterns and yarn. I know that I could do them myself but running this group, working nightshift and trying to look after my tribe takes up so much time that I would not get any other knitting done for weeks if I take this on personally. :0)

Some of our hospitals have especially requested burial gowns and angel wraps so if any of you are strong enough to try making these very much needed but heartbreaking items I can provide patterns for knitted and crocheted items.

Right - it is 4.30am and the weather is appalling out there - so if I manage to get home this morning without getting drowned or blown away I will be back soon to keep you up to date with the Easter Challenges and all of our donations and requests :0)

Parcels!

Well girls - I have just spent two whole days re-organising the office a bit and now have all of our yarn stocks separated into boxes labelled with whats inside! This will make it a whole lot easier for me to make you up packs of yarn to send out when you need it! If any of you have knitting machines and like to make our wee things by machine I do have quite a few cones here - let me know if you want any sent out as they do take up a lot of space and there aren't many of them suitable for hand knitting unless we use two or three cones together to maybe knit blankets (the colour schemes would be rather nice don't you think!).

The exciting news is that I have just parcelled up 30 jumpers and cardigans for Feed The Children! I will get them off in the post this week - our first donation to them! I also have five bags of things for Blythswood Care - two are used clothing, one is bric-a-brac for their shops and the other two are filled with blankets, scarves, hats, mittens and other garments to be sent overseas!

I have also packed a box for Shelley at preemiesuk with the items for her washbag challenge (she wanted to repay the kindness shown to her father when he was in intensive care by donating some filled washbags for patients who are brought in suddenly) and also some wee hats and cardigans for her charity as well. We also sent twenty of our knitted 'boobs' to Peterborough Hospital as Shelley had a request for some there. The other eighty were shipped off to Tommee Tippee headquarters (much to the delight of Avril Deane who has now got our wee Jenna's photgraph - complete with her bucket of boobies - pinned above her desk!). These ones will be taken to the Midwives conference next month and hopefully will all be snapped up by the health professionals attending for their classes (in exchange Avril is asking for donations for Breast Cancer Charity so we are helping in two ways here!).

Our Easter Challenge is going really well too - we now have 40 hats and 14 dolls and bears in the challenge box! No boobies in the box yet but I am off to start on those right now! (I know some of you have been working on these too but I don't count them till they arrive here in the Office so hopefully the 'boob' target will shoot up in a week or two! :0).

Once the letters start to come back in from the hospitals we will have a better idea of the needs there are out there. We are very lucky to have a new member who is able to sew beautiful burial gowns for our little lost angels which will be such a comfort for many parents. We also have one or two willing to knit angel pockets or gowns - it is very hard and for most of you an impossible task - I know my very fist angel pocket was soaked in my own tears before it was finished and my dear husband asked me why I was doing it if it hurt me so much. The answer was easy - if it was my baby I would want to give the little mite some dignity and care before letting it go off to live with the angels. Fortunately these days there is so much that can be done and the majority of prem babies do survive but at least when the unthinkable happens groups like ours are here to provide some support - well done to all of you for being with us and working so hard to help others :0)

Right enough crying over the pc - there is work to be done! Hopefully by next week these targets for our Easter Challenge will have grown - and now that I am organised your requests for yarn and patterns can be sent out even faster!

Just realised I had posted the Easter Challenges on the Forum site but not on here! Meeting myself coming back these days I guess :0)

Right here we go:-

The challenge for Easter Sunday 2008 is .........

100 small dolls for prem baby units and baby pack (the Jelly Babies one posted on this site is brilliant or you can use one of Jean Greenhowes or the wee baby pack bears maybe - you choose!).

100 Hats for seafarers - this is to help out the British and International Seafarers Society (BISS) who have been giving hats to fishermen and sailors since 1818. The hats need to be in a washable yarn as they will probably be machine washed on board a lot of these boats. We have the patterns for these too although you can use any man's hat pattern you like and make them as funky and as bright as you wish - just because they are men doesn't mean that everything we send has to be in blacks, blues, greys and sludgy greens :0)

Finally - our old chestnut - another 100 boobs for our dear friends at Tommee Tippee - Avril has now got involved with the Breast cancer society and they are taking our boobs along to shows etc with them and if any health professionals want some for their breastfeeding classes they make a donation to the breast cancer society as a thank you - so this way we are helping two fold which is great! (The other greats here are all the donations for Baby Pack we get from Tommee Tippee in return and also the postage is free so no strain on our resources!).

Our next challenges will probably be more 'baby' related as we have now written to all of the SCBU's. Delivery Suites and Post Natal Wards asking for their 'wish lists' for 2008 so we will probably have a huge list of wants and needs very soon!

Keep up the good work and remember to get in touch if you need any patterns, wool, stuffing or needles - it is better off out there with you guys being used up than stored in my office (and Meg's caravan which is apparently about bursting at the seams with all the stuff she keeps squeezing into it!). :0)

A big welcome to all our new members who have joined us either at the meetings or by post in the last few weeks - our membership now stands at 102 - not bad for an organisation that was only begun 6 months ago :0)

Watch out for counters to let you see how many items we have made for the challenge this time. Preemiesuk did a great job of kickstarting us off with a donation of 28 sailors hats, 2 dolls and 7 Feed the Children jumpers last week - we were all delighted - thank you so much Shelley! :0)

I have since come home with another 6 hats and a bear from the meetings yesterday and I have made 4 Jelly Baby dolls and a hat myself in the last few days too so we are well on our way!

Here it is guys - the lovely - yummy , gummy, jelly baby pattern Raynor found for us on Crafty Bits - now do not be surprised if this pops up in the Easter Challenges - we will be announcing what they are on Tuesday! Watch this space.......

I do love these gummy babies though - they are very cute - 4mm needles - odd balls of dk yarn and Bobs your Uncle! You could send these in unstuffed as well - like the boobies so it would save on p+p :0)

Our prem baby units would love these and Shelley has already said Preemies would like some for their baby units and we can also use these as the toys for the Baby Packs so they do tick a lot of Loving Hands boxes!

I have printed off and laminated some copies of this one, the sailors hats and the boobs patterns so if any of you need any 'hard' copies just let me know and I will post them out to you! :0)

As you can see my final parcel from my wonderful Secret Pal has arrived. I now know her name is Gisella and she is from Germany!

There were some packets of lovely German biscuits in the box too but before I could fetch my camera my son had them opened and into the biscuit box. (he says they all taste delicious though - I will find out after I finish posting!).

As you can see from the photos she has been ever so generous with this last package - she wanted to give me a flavour of a German Christmas so there are a couple of wee straw Christmas trinkets - one to put on the mantel and one to hang on the tree - also a chocolate santa clause (Jenna has her eye on that already!) and some really unusual yarn. The card is handmade too and really pretty :0) Thank you so much Gisella - you have been a delightful Secret Pal - hopefully we will stay in touch after this. You have been a star :0)

Gisella even contributed to our Christmas challenge as she sent a prem baby cardigan with her last parcel which has been added to the collection!

Right off to try those lovely biscuits!

Christmas Challenge 2007!!!!

Here we are girls!

Our Christmas Challenge 2007! If you ever wondered what a 6 year old buried under 93 boobies looks like then wonder no more! We have had such a laught this afternoon counting and taking photos to let you all see how we have done!

The grand totals are:-

Boobies - 93

Prem Baby Sets - 102

Give yourselves a huge pat on the back - by the time the new year comes in I will have brought the boobies total up to the 100 we needed - I have one almost finished as I type so it won't take me long to make the final six!

I think this is a great achievement and we now have even more members (91 as of yesterday!) so whatever challenge we decide on for Easter there will be more members to get the items made in time!

I think for the next time I will keep a counter going and every few days update it so that you can all see if we are struggling or not - that way it will be easier to keep track :0)

Thank you all so much for all your hard work - it doesn't mean I am going to let you all off the hook - I will expect you all to keep knitting, crocheting and sewing as we leap into 2008.

You are all stars - thank you!

Countdown to announcement of Christmas results!

OK folks - it is almost time to let you all know how well we have done! I have just returned from the sorting office with another two parcels (thanks to Claire and Mary for those!) with another 12 boobies and three prem sets in them - I know we have definitely clobbered the prem set challenge but the boobies will be close so I am going to get these stuffed then we can have a count and photograph session later so I can make the announcement!

You have all done so well rising to the challenge - hopefully next year we will manage to have several more challenges depending on the requests we get from our Charities!

Hope it All Went Well!

Well - did you all get what you wanted for Christmas? I certainly got a lot of lovely things - the company of my six wonderful kids and my beautiful grandaughter would have been enough mind you :0) (Although I was glad to see them all safely home so I could have a rest at the end of it all!) :0)

I am looking forward to picking up the post tomorrow so that I can see if we have made our targets. I have the camera at the ready although I might need to do the final boob stuffing by myself as our wee Jenna is ill so not really in the mood to help out :0( Hopefully the medecine we got for her today will do the trick and we can get her back on her feet and smiling again in a day or two.

I have one final parcel to post off to bring SP11 to an end - hopefully the recipient will like what I have sent her this time - it is very hard to please other people - I always try to choose the best things I can but we can't always get it right. (How many times do you have to smile and say 'Oh it's lovely - just what I wanted' when in your mind you are wondering when the next Sale of Work is to get rid of it!). My heart in my mouth I will send this final gift box and hope for a kind response this time - fingers crossed :0)

On the subject of SP11 - I have just found out that my hostess Jenn lost her father recently - on behalf of all here at Loving Hands Jenn - our hearts and thoughts go out to you. It is never easy to lose a loved one. God Bless you and your family at this sad time.

Right - the dinner is almost cooked so I had better go and feed the mad beasts! Talk to you all soon!

Happy Christmas to all my lovely Loving hands members out there! I will be delaying the announcement of the christmas Challenges until Thursday as I missed the pick up at them post office yesterday so don't know what final parcels were there to be added in. I know we have definitely beaten the prem baby challenge but we were struggling a bit on the booby front so hopefully once I pick up the post (and knit like mad for the next couple of days too!) we might just make it :0) Watch out for numbers and photos on Thursday!

We will discuss the next challenge at the first meeting of 2008 (usual venues in kelty and Kirkcaly on Monday 7th January). Hopefully you will all rise to that one as well abd we will sail through it! :0)

You are all amazing people and it has been a privilege to have you all on board this year - to all my members both old and new let me say Happy New Year and lets make it a very productive one!

Happy Christmas to all Loving Hands members - thank you all for the great work you have done this year and we are all looking forward to what can be achieved in 2008. :0)

I will be counting the baby things and boobies tomorrow after I have been out to collect the mail for the last time before christmas - fingers crossed! :0)

Hopefully we will be able to think of a suitable challenge for Easter time to get you all competing again - you have all been so great contributing to the Christmas challenges - hope we have made it!

Loving Hands is going from strength to strength which proves to me that there are enough kind hearted and loving souls out there in the UK to keep me very busy for the next year or so!

Christmas Fayre and Challenges

Well - the Fayre is over - sadly it didn't go as well as we would have hoped but we have made over £200 for the postage fund (enough to post two 13.6Kgs boxes so I will get a bit of space back in the office!). Unfortunately the timing was all wrong - the church had had their own Christmas Fayre the Saturday before and they had made £1000 at their one :0( Next year we will plan well in advance, make sure we aren't anywhere near the church sale and advertise in every available space we can find!

We did have a great time though and we do have a lot of extra things left over which will be great when the market stalls start up in the JRD trust after the new year. Meg is going to take our craft items and sell them there for us which will boost the funds again :0) We are still hoping for a few donations from various sources as well. Once I have the packing boxes in place I will pack them all up with 13.6kgs in each so we can get them away asap.

Well done for all your help girls - I will post some photos of the stalls etc from home to let you all see how great it looked.

Christmas Challenges:

I have had a quick count and we have managed to collect 80 prem baby cardigans and hats and 44 boobs already! We still have two weeks to go so I am sure we will make it - keep it up gang! I am knitting boobies at every available opportunity (in between christmas shopping, wrapping parcels and writing cards!). I went out and had some cards printed for my family today and I have put the photo of our wee Jenna posing with her box of boobs on the front of it - she was so pleased when she saw what I had done! :0)

Forum:

We have hd another two members join the Forum today as well - welcome to Lis and Taylor - (Forum names) - I know you are both already members and working away for us as we speak - hope you enjoy being on the Forum as much as we do. It has been great letting everyone get to know one another better. We can't thank Pam enough for setting up the Forum and Website for us:0)

In the Papers Again!

Well - we are in the papers again folks! This week's Fife Free Press is carrying a photo of Meg and I with staff from the JRD Trust - and a load of our knitted boobies - again! Along with a story and details of the Kirkcaldy meeting and the Christmas Fayre! Hopefully this will result in lots of new members for the meeting and a good turnout for the Fayre!

Talking about the Fayre - please can you send in your donations for the crafts /tombola/ raffles etc this week as I will need to have them by Friday:0) The JRD Trust are going to do the teas and coffees for the event so we can concentrate on the main hall - thanks girls! :0) I can't wait for it all to be done so that I can take all these parcels to the post office and I can then maybe get the office decorated and the new floor laid! (I am still sharing the room with Winnie the Pooh wallpaper! Not very office like!).

OK - It is time to go home so I will get this posted - talk to you all again soon - we are now 80 strong and the Forum is going like a Fayre too - it is nice to have the opportunity to chat to you all and get to know you - if you haven't done so already why not hop over there and join up - you know you want to!

Sorry I haven't updated for a while guys - there has been so much going on here! We now have our own website http://www.lovinghands.org.uk/ It looks really great and there are links on there to take you directly to both the Forum and to here! Pam has also put in lots of patterns and links to other sites too and publicised our challenges and Christmas Fayre as well as the local meetings - what a star she is! Thanks Pam - you are a real treasure :0)

This is the new link to the patterns on the Ray of Hope site - Pam did want to publish some of the patterns on our web site but sadly Ray of Hope cannot give permission as the BBC did not like the patterns being reproduced elsewhere. Never mind you can still access the patterns to use for charity from the above link and the one on the web site.

We have had lots of photo shoots etc since I last published - the latest one just this morning for the Fife Free Press to advertise the Kirkcaldy meetings (Monday evenings 7-9pm in the JRD Trust, 9 The Esplanade, Kirkcaldy). And also the Christmas Fayre - 8th December 10am to 1pm in Kelty Church - remember girls if you have anything to donate for the craft stall, tombola or raffle we will need it to be here by the 7th December. We have already had some lovely things sent or handed in for the crafts stall and the raffle and tombola prizes are filtering through as well! If you live locally and can bake don't forget the cake and candy stall too! :0)

We now have 78 members on the books so hopefully we will get enough boobs and prem baby sets to meet the Christmas challenges - another 22 members and I will have reached my personal target of 100 members by Christmas day! The extra publicity from the web site and forum are certainly paying off as is all the press coverage we have been getting. We are becoming known up and down the country! Many thanks to all of you who have added links to our sites to other web based things you are on and your own personal Blogs - it all helps!

Right - it is getting late and I have been rushing about all day so I am off for a sleep before it all begins again in the morning!

Lots of press!

Hi Guys!

Well there has been lots of press interest in our group since the Dunfermline Press printed their story (complete with a very embarrassing photo of yours truly with a pair of our knitted boobies!). We were visited at out Kelty meeting yesterday by a couple of really lovely girls from Capital Press (an agency from Edinbugh I believe) they spent an hour and a half chatting to us all and taking hundreds of photos and are now going to try to get us into some women's magazines! It will be great if they do - the publicity can only help us! :0)

They have also said they will come along to our Christmas Fayre on the 8th December which will be great as well. Meg has now bought the Santa suit so all we need is a suitable gent to fill it! Watch this space.....

We have had so many parcels the last week that I can hardly move in here! Thanks to Ann on the Isle of Man again - she has sent over another consignment of goods from the wonderful lady who closed down her shop and donated the leftover stock to us - these things are going to be fantastic for Baby Pack and Blythswood. She also sent some more yarn and lots of knitted things too - what a busy lady!

Mrs J Harris from the Coventry area has also sent us a box containing baby girls clothes - these will come in very useful for Baby Pack too - thank you Mrs Harris!

Another big thank you has to go to Kim and John Cumming who advertised our cause on the Fife freecycle network and then spent days driving all over Fife collecting several large bin bags full of yarn (mostly coned) which will make loads of fantastic blankets!!! Thanks to Kim and John and to all the wonderful ladies on Freecycle who have donated this yarn. I have also acquired a couple of new members from the same group - welcome on board Wendy and Suzanne your contributions will be gratefully received!

Annette Randle has also joined us and has posted a link to our site on her Blog, thank you Annette - your parcel arrived yesterday with the lovely baby surprise cardigans and hats along with the other things - my ladies on the committee here are going to try knitting the baby surprise jacket themselves so listen out for anguished screams when we get stuck!

Yesterday at our meeting in Kelty a lovely old gentleman came in and told us that his dear lady wife had succumbed to the awful illness altzheimers and for the last couple of years had sadly had to live in a care home. Seeing our feature in the Dunfermline Press had motivated him to clear out her knitting things and he had brought us all her yarn, needles and patterns. Thank you my dear for such a lovely gesture - rest assured that all of these things will be put to very good use here :0)

Then today I got a parcel from our dear Do - also from the Isle of Man - she had lovingly parceled up some beautiful prem baby clothes and burial outfits which she had made for us and she has also sent me a very sweet stuffed Manx cat (no Do he is not ugly at all - I will keep him here on the shelf in loving Hands headquarters to keep an eye on things and bring us luck!). She tells me that her husband Bob had signed on to our website and was most impressed to see her name mentioned on it even though she would have no idea how to sign on for herself! Rest assured Bob your lovely wife will be mentioned many times on this website she is a real treasure to us (as I am sure she is to you and your family).

The other bit of exciting news is that one of our newer members has bought us our very own website and as we speak is busy getting it all set up and ready to launch. Thanks Pam - you are doing a great job - Pam tells me her daughter is a web designer so she will keep her mum right when setting this up for us. I will post the link to the site as soon as it is up and running. She is going to put on contact details and links to patterns etc. to make it easy for people coming onto the site to navigate it. This could take a few weeks to complete but won't it be great!

And finally - our new meeting in Kirkcaldy launched last night at 7pm in the JRD Trust, 9 The Esplanade. Sadly there were only Meg and myself there last night (it was a freezing wet night and we had a flurry of snow as well so I don't really blame people for not coming out. Meg is going to try to get us an advertising feature in the Fife Free Press for next time so more people will know we are there.

Right then guys - I am off to get on with some more knitting - I have taken this week off work so I can get more organising done for the Christmas Fayre - hopefully we will get lots of items in for the crafts stall and loads of people through the doors on the day :0)

Hello Everyone out there in Cyberspace!

I am getting really worried - have you all vanished or is it just Yahoo messing me about????? I have been sending out lots of emails to you wonderful members about the Christmas fayre and Christmas challenge but so far have not had a single reply in over two weeks????? Are you getting these emails at all or is it just that you have all been too busy to reply to me??? With the Christmas Fayre and challenge deadlines fast approaching it is getting very unnerving that I cannot make contact. I am going to write a global letter and send it out to all of you that I have addresses for (if you are reading this and haven't yet sent me the response to the questionnaire or registered your details please do so now as I will need everyones details for Christmas :0) If you are new to reading this and want to become part of our group then also please send me your details:-

Update from Tommee Tippee

Hi Guys!

Got a lovely message back from Avril at Tommee Tippee the other day - the Boobies have landed and they are delighted with them! I have attached a photo of Avril with the box in her offices - as you can see she is delighted! Now we need to manage to make the 100 for the Christmas Challenge so that I will have a reason to go down there in person in January to hand them over to her!

The local paper has been round taking photos and getting a story for next weeks edition - great publicity for us and perfect timing for the launch of the Kirkcaldy meeting the following Monday! They have also promised to advertise the Christmas fayre for us too so that should help let people know what we are doing!

Next step will be to send out letters to all the local businesses and ask for donations for the raffle or tombola. I know that a lot of you have been busy making extra crafty items for us too so if you have please can you send them up by the end of November so we will be able to keep a check on how much we have for our stall!

So far we have managed to get quite a few crafters to take stalls as well - their stall rental will boost the profits and also people coming in to see what they have made will hopefully buy from our own stalls as well!

We have:-

Gifts 2 Go (peruvian jewellery, soap, bath potions, soft toys etc)

Kingdom Crafts (hand made cards, card kits and blackwork)

Calligraphy

Hand made Glass jewellery

Preserves

as well as all the usual Cake and Candy, tombola, raffle , face painting, hair braiding, guess the gorilla's birthday, teas, books, white elephant and of course..... Santa!

Hopefully we will get a good turnout!

I hope you have all been making things for the Christmas Challenge! I know we are all working hard here making boobs and prem baby cardigans and hats - remember we need to have 100 of each by Christmas to make our target. I am sure we can make it as the list is getting longer all the time!

Volunteer of the Year!

Hi Guys!

You'll never guess what happened to me on Thursday night???? I was at the Volunteer of the year Awards in Kirkcaldy and I won! I came home with a trophy and a certificate and all because I chose to start Loving Hands after the Volunteer Knitathon in June! You could have knocked me down with a feather when they announced my name - I had no idea it would be me - those devils at the Volunteer Centre and Sky had certainly done a good job of keeping me in the dark :0) I have just had the Dunfermline Press on the phone for an update so hopefully they will feature the dates and times of the local meetings and also they are sending a photographer out to take photos in the morning when I get in from work. I guess all publicity is great as it gets us more members and lets people see we are doing so well.

The Christmas Fayre is taking shape well now - we now have more craft stalls booked in and it looks like we will have lots of willing helpers on board too which is great. Remember if any of you have any items for our craft stall or would like to donate a prize for the raffle or the tombola (or if you live locally and you can bake for the cake and candy!). We will need to have all contributions in before the end of November so we can be ready to set up the stalls in time!

I have just sent a box containig 60 of our hand knitted boobies off to Tommee Tippee as they have a big launch to do next week - Avril tells me she has another box of goodies for us )not just nappies she says but she has included things she hopes we will find useful too) she has been such a Godsend to us - if you are reading this Avril we really appreciate all you have done to help Baby Pack and ourselves - and don't worry we will keep on knitting boobies for you for the Breast cancer project next year - some of us are getting really quite fast at making them and I have just bought in 8kgs of stuffing to keep Miss Jenna busy filling them for you! :0)

We have had a lot of new members joining by letter this last week thanks to the feature in Let's Knit! Magazine which is brilliant. I will now need to contact the magazines again to update our meetings as we will be having two local meetings once the Kirkcaldy group starts up on November 12th!

Right - must dash - I could fit in a couple of good knitting hours before I pick up the kids if I get started right now!

CHRISTMAS FAYRE!

It's official! The church is booked and we are having our very first Loving Hands Christmas Fayre in Kelty Church on the 8th December from 10am to 1pm!

I have managed to book the whole church for this so we will be having teas in the small hall, santa, face painting and hair braiding in the session room and then there will be all the stalls in the church hall itself! (Our church is lovely and warm and they don't have pews downstairs just chairs so these can be put back to the side so the whole church is free to lay out tables!).

So far the line up for the main hall is as follows:-

A craft stall for ourselves - we will be able to sell any donated craftwork from members on this stall - we already have lots of lovely fluffy scarves, babies headbands and bonnets and the promise of handmade cards, knitting needle rolls, bears and lots of other lovely things - all contributions very welcome - anything that doesn't sell on this day can go into the shop at JRD in Kirkcaldy to help with our fundraising there!

Cake and Candy - again just for us and all contributions very welcome!

Tombola /Raffle/ Treasure Hunt / Guess the Gorilla's Birthday

White Elephant - again for us - contributions gratefully received!

Gifts 2 Go - Peruvian jewellery, fridge frames, soft toys and other things.

Kingdom Crafts - Handmade Cards and Blackwork and kits for these as well.

Heather and Cheryls glass jewellery and canvasses.

Second Hand Bookstall - the Lions Club are bringing this one! Thanks guys!

Not a bad start - I am now looking for a few different things to add to this line up to draw in the crowds.

I have already printed off the posters and I will try to get it into as many local papers as possible.

Right - haven't got long to chat now as I have to rush off in twenty different directions with this brood of mine today - good job there's a lot of me to go round! :0)

Hopefully this link will take you all to the website we have been using for most of our prem baby things - the baby's v necked cardigan pattern donated by Julia Rees is just perfect for our preemies challenge and comes out a perfect 14" size too! Make a matching hat to go with it - I like the hand knit pull on baby hat from this site which is knitted sideways and then gathered!

I am praying that this has worked as I haven't tried anything so technical before :0)

Now I am off to book the local church hall for our Christmas Fayre - fundraising for our postal fund :0)

Let's Knit!

It's here folks! I dashed out and bought issue one today to see what it was like and they have a photo of a box of our boobies with a feature about what we are up to in the Meet and greet pages! Hopefully we will get a response from this! I have signed up for the three issues for £1 thing they have so will get the first one for £1 in November - the mag is pretty expensive (£4.99) if you buy it from the shops but you are getting subscriptions a lot cheaper so if you like it that will probably be the best way to go - I haven't checked out the DVD that came along with it but there is a nice wee baby set in it that would be great for Baby Pack!

I have heard back from HMS Argylle and the boys are really excited that we are trying to help them out - they have promised that not only will they pay the yarn and postage costs for their jumpers if we can get them made for them but they will also give us a donation for the postage fund which is definitely good!

I was thinking of approaching the Press and trying to put this out as a competition with a prize for the best Christmas Jumper???? Thought the publicity could only do us good and we should then get more jumpers for the lads which would be a great boost for morale on board when it comes to Christmas Day....... watch this space! :0)

Got an e-mail from Avril at Tommee Tippee tonight - apparently she has been speaking to our Press Officer (Tukiya - the Sky television press girl - lovely lady - always trying to get my photo in the local press!). We should be heading down there the week after next so I will be delivering these Boobs in person after all :0)
If I can just get those ones in from Kincardine we will make 100 for this run - I know a lot of you have already started on the Christmas challenge - thank you so much for that - we are certainly going to need every boob we can make as Avril tells me they have big plans for this project next year and will be using it to help publicise Breast Cancer awareness which is just fantastic - I am sure we would all be very proud to be helping such a worthwhile campaign.

Having said that we will not ignore our other charities either. We are busily working on the 100 prem baby cardigans and hats for the challenge as we speak and I am sure there are some of you still working on blankets (for babies, OAPs and animals), first size baby clothes for Baby Pack, Burundi Bears and also warm clothing for Blythswood. The need is always great and I am sure that we will be a great help to all of our nominated charities in the coming months :0)

Right - time for bed I think - a lot of knitting to be done and I am so tired - my monsters walked me off my feet yesterday as I had to take them shopping for essentials (they go back to school on Monday - hurray!) and number two son wanted to spend his birthday money on new games (it was a mammoth day out - two teenage boys, one 6 year old daughter, one 20 year old daughter and her offspring - my 2 year old grandaughter and me - shopping in town, lunch in a far too expensive restaurant where youngest daughter and grandaughter decided to play up while they waited for their food - much to the amusement of the two teenage tearaways - then off round Asdas for food shopping before returning home to do the housework which didn't get done in the morning because Grandma decided she was going to come on this PC and check out her Blog and e-mails - phew!!!!). Christmas Challenge and Kirkcaldy Meetings starting!

Hi Folks!

Right - we have now got our venue and dates for Kirkcaldy - we are all very excited here at Headquarters - things are going so well for us at the moment :0)

The Kirkcaldy meetings will start on Monday November 12th from 7pm to 9pm and then every Monday after that at the same time and place! They will be in the JRD Trust, 9 The Esplanade, Kirkcaldy, KY1 1HR. Meeting fees are the same as Kelty, every member attending the meeting pays £2 - this covers hall fees and any surplus is added to the postage fund. There is a coffee bar available at this venue so you will be able to buy tea/coffee and snacks on site! I am currently printing up posters to put out letting everyone know about it - don't forget if you are in the area do come along - even if you cannot stay for meetings we will be glad to accept your finished items and donations of yarn, needles, toy stuffing etc at the same time :0)

Christmas Challenge!

As promised we have decided on the Christmas Challenge for this year........

Between now and Christmas our target is to produce 100 prem baby cardigans with matching hats and 100 knitted boobs! It may seem a tall order but if every member makes something we can achieve this easily! I have the pattern for the boobs and the patterns we have been using to make the 14" prem cardis and hats that the hospitals are wanting - this way you will all have access to them (I can attach them to an e-mail or send you out hard copies in the post whichever suits you best!). If any of you need some yarn then let me know and I will post some out to you - we do have plenty here and it is as well out there being used as lying here in boxes! :0)

As you can see from the photos we have made a start already! The wee cardigans and hats in the photo I have made in the last couple of days the patterns come from the BBC Stoke and Staffordshire - Ray of Hope - premature babywear website - the cardigan is the one that says Baby's V necked Cardigan and is knitted top down ( so easy to do and you just have the sleeves to sew up at the end!). The hat is the Hand Knit Pull-On Baby Hat and is knitted from side to side and then gathered at one end to make the crown - again a very simple but effective pattern! We love it! The other one the ladies up here love to do is the all in one cardigan from the Bliss website (it was featured in Knitting magazine a couple of months back).

OK - so there you are - a new meeting to come to and a Challenge to keep you all busy till Christmas! :0)

The other big thing is that Let's Knit magazine comes out this week and we are featured in it as well so hopefully there will be lots of lovely new members all ready to help us complete - and overtake - this challenge very soon! :0)

OH - before I forget - we did get another odd request from BHKC the other day - apparently there were some soldiers who will be spending Christmas serving in the Gulf who have asked them to find some kind ladies who could make them Christmas themed jumpers to wear on Christmas day - they felt that this would make them feel closer to home at this very family orientated time of year. I have e-mailed the guys and asked them for sizes etc. they did not mind if the jumpers were hand or machine knitted and are willing to pay the cost of the yarn and the postage. I will let you know if they reply and what they say. In the meantime if any of you are interested in helping them out then let me know asap.

Wow! What a busy post this week :0) Right I am off to start another wee cardi and hat set - targets to meet and challenges to fill! :0)

Hi Guys!

From a wonderful sunny Fife - can't believe this good weather is still holding! As you will see from the attached photos the weather was great on our weekend away to a Chalet at St. Fillans as well!

I have also put on a photograph of our wee Jenna with a box containing 50 boobs all ready for Tommee Tippee - we are pulling in and making more as fast as we can before we go down to Newcastle - if I could get the ones in from Margaret in Kincardine we might make the 100 mark before we go! Jenna has been helping me out by stuffing the 'boobs' for me so I just have to sew them up - she has had such fun doing it and it has caused much hilarity in our house I can tell you! :0)

I sent out an email update the other day but five of them have come back as undeliverable - please if you have changed your email address do let me know as I would hate to lose touch with anyone!

I have been counting and we now have 50 members up and down the country working away - you are all brilliant! We have had a few new ones since the letter was published in 'Simply Knitting' and with the new magazine 'Let's Knit' that is launching next week having a feature about us in it as well we should get even more members from that - don't forget to let all your knitting and crocheting friends and family members know about us - get them to email or write with their details so I can add them to the list (I am hoping to double the numbers to at least 100 in time for Christmas so do your best! :0)

Right I must go and keep knitting 'boobs' - remember we need all your donations - I am hoping to have worked out the Christmas challenge for you all next week so watch this space!

Good morning Happy Knitters!

Sorry I haven't updated for a couple of weeks but things here at Loving Hands Headquarters are very busy right now. Thanks to all of you for the wonderful donations of yarn and knitted items that are now coming in on a very regular basis - you have all been working so very hard! :0)

This month's edition of Simply Knitting has featured a letter from myself which has already generated several e-mails and the editor has asked me to keep in touch with what we are doing!

BHKC have added us to their list of charities on their website which is great news too - the more places we are seen the better!

Thanks also to Do and Anne over on the Isle of Man -they are passing out flyers to lots of places and have also contacted the local WI and Hospices to join in as well. Thanks to these lovely ladies it looks like we might end up with a growing group of lovely knitters and crocheters on the Island. We are still trying to track down a means of moving all the items donated to Anne by a local shop that was closing down. I have tried the local newspapers website and sent a message to the Letters to the editor page but I don't think they have published it yet. We are hoping that a carrier from the Island could bring the bags over to Dunfermline, Perth or Edinburgh for us so that we can pick them up from there. Anyone with any ideas we would love to hear from you????

Thanks also to Fynn - our Liver bird - she has sent us in some scarves and extra yarn - keep up the good work Fynn!

We have had several other donations of yarn given anonymously this month too - some in the post and some handed in by lovely locals - thank you all - your donations mean so much to us.

We are considering having a challenge for everyone in the lead up to Christmas - we will be putting our heads together at the group meeting this afternoon to see where we feel the greatest need is at the moment - then we will challenge you all to make a certain number of something in time for Christmas! Watch this space for details.......

Any ideas to help with fundraising to get these parcels moving faster would also be appreciated - the post is certainly not cheap!

I was also wakened the other morning by a reporter for an Aberdeen newspaper who is doing a feature on rehabilitating drug users and wanted input about Loving Hands - she wondered if knitting would be good therapy for people trying to keep clear of addiction - I said it depended on the addict! :0) Obviously knitting is wonderful therapy for the right people - for others maybe woodwork or metalwork or cooking might be a better choice. What do you guys think?

Hopefully I will be off down to Tommee Tippee with all these Boobs for Avril in the next fortnight - they are really needing them for some events that are coming up. If any of you have any finished ones please send them in asap so I can get them all ready to take down. Don't worry if you don't want to stuff them - I can do that at this end no problem - I know they are cheaper and easier to post unstuffed!

The other major need at the moment are 14" to 16" prem baby cardigans and hats - these are the most needed sizes and are always running low. The top down one on the Stoke 'Ray of Hope' site is the one I have been using recently - it knits up to 14" and is so easy to do - you only have to sew up the sleeve seam and add the button band to finish it! (If you don't have a printer and need any of our patterns just e-mail with your 'snail mail' address and I will send you some out.)

Secret Parcels and a whole lot more!

Good morning everyone!

This week has been great! The local newsletter has printed the follow up to the Knitathon and all the details about Loving Hands so hopefully that will attract more ladies (or even gents) along to the Monday afternoon meetings. Fife Womens Technology Centre are knitting for us as well and have asked where to hand in their items - thanks ladies - you are brilliant! Our lovely Do from the Isle of Man has been on the phone for more knitting patterns - keep up the good work Do it is always great talking to you! Tukiya (Sky televisions Press Officer) has told me it won't be long now before we go down to meet up with Avril at Tommee Tippee - I am really excited about this as Avril seems to be such a lovely lady and it will be great to meet her face to face and be able to thank her for all the fabulous donations of nappies, baby bottles etc she has sent in for Baby Pack! I will make sure I collect in all completed 'Boobs' before I got down so that I can give here a really HUGE mountain of them!

My secret pal Jennie Rouse has sent along two large bags of yarn this week as well - thank you Jennie - all contributions are very gratefully received and it won't be long beofre all these eager hands have turned this yarn into useful items for our charities! Jennie is also roping in all her lovely knitting friends and hopefully some of them will decide to knit us a few items as well!

Talking about Secret Pal - the wonderful new Pal that was allocated to me has sent me my first parcel this week. Thank you so much! The parcel has come from Germany so I think I must have been right about that part of it (her e-mail provider is German so I thought that must be a clue!). The parcel was great and I got lots of lovely goodies from her!

The pictures above show the parcel when it arrived! Then I unwrapped it and it was filled in with pieces of a German magazine - once I removed those and unwrapped the parcel I found all those lovely things inside!

A hand made knitting needle wrap - very nice! I will think of her every time I use it - just the thing for carrying projects about in the car etc as I keep losing needles through the bottom of my bag at present!

A lovely little random yarn cardigan for Baby Pack - the pattern is very unusual and the buttons ever so cute!

Two bars of German chocolate - my hubby has latched on to those - says they would be bad for my diet!

6 balls of lovley yarn - 4 pale blue and 2 random pink - these will make perfect baby things - I love soft luxury yarns for baby things! And the colours are gorgeous!

Finally there was a lovely card with a message from her as well.

Brilliantly done my secret friend - I will look forward to the rest of Secret Pal with bated breath!

Right - now it is my daughter Roxanne's 20th birthday today so I am off to pull the rest of my brood together so we can go visit and give her all her presents and cards - bad planning on my part - son Andrew is 24 on Thursday - daughter Kelly is 27 on the 19th and our 10th wedding anniversary is on the 20th (been together for 17 years now though - second husband and dad of Johnny and Jenna)- closely followed by younger son Johnny's 15th on the 8th October. This is a very busy time for presents and visits!

New members and lots of donations!

Well - this has been a really busy week for us - we have had another huge donation from Tommee Tippee - thank you so much Avril - you are a real star!!! Those nappies, baby bottles and dummies will be welcomed with open arms in Kwa Zulu Natal!

We have also had parcels of yarn from a couple of places - thanks girls - it will all be put to a good cause!

A new member from Liverpool has just joined us today as well - welcome Fynn - our first Liverbird I think - you will be a very valuable member of our team I am sure!

My 'almost' secret pal has come up trumps for us too - she has told her knitting group all about Loving Hands and they have already given her a load of yarn to send in to us - hopefully some of them will knit for us as well - it is brilliant! Thanks Chris - you are great! :0)

Now - if any of you can come up with some ideas how we can fund raise to get these parcels out do share them with me - I am trying to post out as fast as I can but the African ones cost an arm and a leg.

Right - this old lady is exhausted tonight so I am off to beddy by land - lots to knit tomorrow and an office to re-organise before I disappear under all this stuff!

4ply cardis and happy pals!

Well - the weather up here in fabulous Fife is glorious! It has been in the high twenties for the last three days - can't believe it - the kids are back at school and the sun is taunting them! :0) Hope it lasts for the weekend so they can get out and have some fun in it!

I am busily knitting up some prem cardis in 4ply - apparently the biggest needs in the prem baby units are for cardis and hats for the wee ones once they can come out of the incubators so from 10" size up to around the 14 to 16" sizes would be best. They also need small baby blankets in close knit patterns (don't want to catch any tiny, fragile fingers in lacey designs!). Very useful information for us as we wouldn't want to be busily knitting thing sthat are not required! Once I have a decent set of samples made up I will pop round some of the local maternities and let them tell me which items they need most!

My secret pal got her parcel today and she was over the moon with everything in it - her blog has been updated today already - she posted photos of every item and seemed to be over the moon - this is what makes SP such fun! I can't wait to see what my own 'spoiler' picks out for me - it's a bit of a hit and miss affair as sometimes you get someone (a bit like me I guess) who really gets carried away with it all and sends loads of things regularly during the 3 months and then you get the ones who stick rigidly to the amount suggested and use it to buy one larger item at the start and finish. I like the small parcels often route best as it keeps the excitement going and you know you have made your pal really happy! Bet you are all dying for the next round to start in December sop you can all join up for SP12! :0)

Right - if I go and get the floors mopped and feed the mega mutts I can maybe get some more knitting done before DH returns from work :0)

I've Got a New Pal!

Well - I have just checked my e-mails to find messages from my Hostess and Shelby telling me that I have been sorted out with my new secret pal and then hey presto - there was a message saying she had been away on a business trip for a few days and was back now and wanted to confirm my details! So I am in business - she sounds nice - it will be great getting to know someone else!

I have already posted my first parcel off to the lady I am spoiling and have had several very excited e-mails back from her. I can't wait to see her reaction when she gets it!

Thanks to Jenn and Shelby my SP11 hostesses for getting in touch and sorting out the SP for me!

Have spent this evening writing thank you notes for all the lovely donations we have had from people who I do not have e-mail addresses for. It is always nice to be recognised for the hard work done to make lovely baby things, blankets, shawls, knitted boobs etc.

OK - almost time to go home from work now - just sneaked in to add this note as things were quiet!

Hope I get a decent sleep today!

Rainy Saturday!

Hi Guys!

Another rainy miserable Saturday! I have just been out and bought a very nice sturdy set of scales so that I can start weighing these parcels myself as I wrap them - you can only send up to 5kg in weight to Africa through the post office and it is murder if you go to all the trouble of packing something just to find it is too heavy once you get there! This way I can check the weight before I seal the package and we will be sorted (I can also work out how much it will be to make sure we have enough postage money too!).

I was in Kirkcaldy this morning and bought a lovely cat mug and some lavendar scented tealights for my secret pal - she loves cats and her favourite scents are things like lavendar and flowers so hopefully she will like these! I also got a lovely card with cats on it so I can send her a nice message - secret pal is great fun :0) Apparently I wasn't the only one who was given someone who lives close by - one of our members has left a post saying it has happened to her as well. The SP hostess says she doesn't know the geography of the uk as she has only ever been out of the states once and that was just to go to Canada. It might be quite nice to have someone close enought to meet up with after the reveal though - could end up making a new friend! :0) We still don't know who will be spoiling us yet so it may be that they come from far away - mmmm exciting!

I am half way through the prem baby blanket I have been making - it is the first time I have made one on the diagonal like that and it is quite fun to do - we will see how it looks when it is done.

I will post a photo of our Cheeky Gorilla on here next week - we are doing a guess his birthday contest at £1 a guess and the ladies in the post office here have put him on the counter to get people to buy guesses. Secret Pal!

I have got my match for Secret Pal 11 - a bit baffled by this one - apparently - even though this is an SP with members from all over the world they decided - in their wisdom - to allocate me someone to spoil who lives less than 40 miles away from my house! I will have to be really devious to try to stop her figuring out I am close by before the event finishes at the end of November.

Wonder who has been given my details - it is a different person who will be spoiling me - I am really excited about this and hopefully this time I will have a really good one (the last two times the people who were meant to spoil me were rather frugal and certainly didn't get into the swing of the secret pal thing at all - hopefully this is third time lucky!).

I have been on my SPs Blog and already have a lot of ideas for things I can send to her - I love to pack up large boxes full of lots of surprises - I imagine what their faces will be like when they start to open everything - it is such fun trying to make sure that you pick things they will love! She has filled in her questionnaire and given me lots of information about her likes and dislikes so hopefully I will manage to make her really happy! :0)

Got a parcel from Shelley Mitchell (Preemiesuk) this morning - 50 tiny baby burial buntings and some washcloths - thanks Shelley! I am sure Val will make use of them - they must have a lot of losses over there :0(

I also got a parcel from Ann on the Isle of Man the other day containing lots of tiny prem hats, shoes and mittens - they are so sweet - they have been put into the box I am filling for Shelley - she will be so pleased - thanks Ann!

We have a guess the Gorilla's birthday thing going on in the local post office to try to raise funds for postage - hopefully we will get a good response.

Secret Pal 11

This is for my Secret Pal - I have signed up for the 11th round of Secret Pal which is an American based secret gifts swap for knitters and crocheters - the rules mean I need to publish this questionnaire and follow ups on the Blog site for my new pal to see - it is great fun - I have been in two before - so I hope you don't mind following my exploits through SP11!

Another Message From Africa!

Morning Everyone!

Lovely morning today - my kids just went back to school so peace reigns supreme in Loving Hands Headquarters at the moment!

Great news yesterday - we got a couple of donations towards postage thanks to the sterling work of Kate in the local post office! She made a set of our 'boobs' for a lady who didn't like the prosthetics she had been given - she apparently loves the knitted ones and has donated £10 as a thank you - Kate also made an adult sized baby bonnet and bootees for one of her colleagues who was going to a fancy dress party and that happy lady donated another £5 - thanks Kate - you are a star!

We are now going to ask the Post Mistress if she will let us put a giant Gorilla in the post office shop and ask customers to guess his birthday - this should generate some more much needed income to get these parcels off to Africa!

Talking about Africa - I had an e-mail last night from Cerys at the Volunteer Centre. The parcels posted over after the knitathon have arrived and Val is delighted with them - I have attached her e-mail for you all to see - She must have been so thrilled getting so many parcels at once!

there is such a big need here in south africa for clothes of all sorts.the packs we make up are a real blessing to these mums as they have nothing for there babies.
please keep up the good work that you are doing for all the charities as if it was'nt for people like yourselves we could'nt do much here.

We are doing great folks - now we mustn't get complacent. Loving Hands is like a puppy - not just for Christmas! We are going to keep on going and help as many people as we can! At the moment I am busy making up a lot of prem baby samples which I will take along to the two local maternity hospitals. Apparently each unit has their own way of doing things and not all of them use the same items.

We are making things for Preemiesuk already - Shelley tells me they are in need of wee blankets, cardigans, bootees and hats so we will make sure she gets a nice load of those very soon! She is sending us some things over as well as she had some extra burial buntings (for the wee lambs who sadly don't make it) and also some wash cloths that she and her young son have been making - thanks Shelley!

Last night I was working on an Angel Pocket (one of the patterns on the above link) I was crying as I made it - just knowing what it was for was enough to reduce me to bits. When I told the girls at the Kelty group they said the same thing happens to them - we are such a tender hearted bunch aren't we. I guess the best way to look at it is that these little touches might give some comfort to grieving parents - but please girls - if it hurts too much don't make the sad things - I don't want parcels of soggy items flooding in to the office :0) Thankfully there is far more need for the other things we make!

Right - I guess I had better go off and get some more work done! I have to sleep this afternoon before I pick the kids up as I work tonight - the joys of nightshift!

Just wanted to share with you all a lovely e-mail I got from Val Bailey in Africa yesterday - as you can see she is over the moon with the news about the wonderful donations of nappies from Tommee Tippee and Lollipop Children's Products - thanks to them for their very kind gifts!

Hi all you good people
This is just great news,nappies are a thing that I just keep running out of. I was able to go out today and buy 58 and have the money to get another 70, this means I can get more packs out to the people who need them.

You know I keep telling people when they pray for something to believe in what they are praying for, I have been praying about nappies for the project and God has been so good ,it is just so uplifting to hear about the nappies. I will pray now for the funding to get them out here and I know I will be looking at them soon.

Thank you so much for all your hard work over there. Im so happy about this I'm punching the air.

I thought the best way to share this with you all was simply to copy and paste her message directly onto here for you all to see! This does make it all very worthwhile and it is nice to be able to share the excitement with all my lovely members.

This Blog is actually viewed by so many more people than I had ever imagined - I got a lovely e-mail from a wonderful American lady called Jean Ewing this morning. She says she has been enjoying reading our posts. She tells me that over there they have a project which teaches kids to knit at the High School she works in. Last year they made scarves, hats and blankets to send to Tsunami Africa and they think they will do the same this year. She asked me to send her some patterns for bonnets and sweaters which I have done - well done Jean - giving with Love is always good - keep up the good work!

Right - back to knitting number one son his first Chenille birthday jumper - it took just 12 hours to make one for my 6 year old daughter yesterday and since last night I have completed front and back of son's one so these are very quick projects indeed. If I have left over chenille I can make it into hats and scarves for Blythswood - this stuff is really soft and cosy - would make a big difference in the hard winters over in Croatia and Albania :0)

Morning all!

Just finished packing up some more parcels of yarn to send out - apparently we now have a following in Forres - thanks to lovely Margaret Hamilton our member in Morayshire! The ladies in Forres have been busily knitting 'boobs' and have even enlisted the help of the LYS in Forres - welcome on board ladies!

I have even got Sophie from Quick and Crafty! magazine knitting for us as well - she was delighted with the information I e-mailed to her the other day and asked for some photos to add in as well. Looks like we are going to be featured in October - a date for your diaries girls - buy Quick and Crafty! magazine in October!

I am adding a photo of myself for you today girls - not to scare you all - just so you can put a face to the name!

I do hate getting photos taken - never mind I have been on a diet recently and have already lost over a stone - I was fed up with the press photographers having to switch to wide angle lenses every time they took my photo! :0)

Quick and Crafty!

Hi Folks!

Well I have just had a very exciting e-mail from a lovely lady at Quick and Crafty! magazine - apparently she is working on a feature about charity knitting for the October issue and wanted to know more about us and what we are doing so she could include us in her feature! I have just sent her back a reply - hopefully she will decide we are worth a mention and we will get some more publicity!

Isn't the internet a wonderful thing - we are reaching out all over the place now and getting new members all the time. I will make a point of taking more photos as things come in so that you can all see what everyone is doing!

All of my chenille yarn for number 1 son's birthday jumpers has turned up today - it is lovely - hope I can manage to make them without him noticing - he is so used to seeing me knitting baby clothes and 'boobs' when he pops in - I will need to make sure I work on his things when he is not likely to visit - wouldn't want to spoil his surprise!

Popped into the post office and Kate handed me another bag of wool someone had handed in to her. This is mohair so would make some nice scarves - I also got some wrapping paper etc as I have to send out some yarn to some of you lovely members who are in need of materials to help you create! :0)

First Group Meeting!

Well ladies - we held the very first group meeting of Loving Hands in the Kelty Community Centre this afternoon and it went very well. I came home clutching a whole box of knitted baby clothes and a bag of knitted and crocheted blankets as well as a large drum of knitting needles donated by one of the members.

Since it was school holidays Miss Jenna accompanied me and was very helpful - she seemed to enjoy helping everyone and handing round the cakes and biscuits! (Mind you I had to 'pay' her £1 for the ice cream van for being good as gold - for a change! :0)

Next step will be to get the meeting advertised in the local newsletter as I am sure most of the ladies who knit in the village read that (if the response I got to the advert and story about the knitathon is anything to go by!).

Today is my 48th birthday! My young grandaughter stayed over with us last night and played up all night long so Grandma looks more like 68 this morning (while little miss Cassie Bear is prancing around wih her auntie Jenna fresh as a daisy - not fair!). Never mind - hopefully as the day progresses Grandma will manage to stay awake to see the family!

I managed to buy a large load of Sirdar WOW! chenille yarn this week so I will be really looking forward to that arriving - number 1 son is desperate to have a nice new chenille jumper so I am going to kick off by making one or two for his birthday and then I guess I will have to do the same for number 2 son who is now almost 15 and looks up to his big bro! Miss Jenna has already laid claim to the fab Raspberry Pink lot and wants a nice jacket made with that so that should keep me out of mischief for a wee while.

I have already had some money for my birthday so I am heading off into town this week to buy some new clothes - I have lost over a stone in the last 6 weeks so my trousers are too big and the shop I go to has a load of very in vogue tops in right now so my daughters might actually aprove of my purchases for a change! (Normally a shopping trip with my gang involves loads of threats to call out the fashion police and screams of 'You are not buying that!' :0)

Right back to the sofa for me to watch last night's Supernatural and knit the cuffs and band onto a lovely wee cardigan for Baby Pack - I had some nice variegated yarn that is perfect for Africa (remember not all white for Africa girls - it is the colour of mourning over there :0) so I am going to knit it up into cardigan, hat and shoes sets. Still very excited about the new nappies that are coming - they will make such a difference - Grandma is tired but the world is not such a bad place! :0)

Another Great Donation!

Great news! I have just had a very exciting e-mail from Jane at Lollipop Children's Products. She tells me that since I wrote to them back in April asking for donations of nappies for The baby Pack Project they have been collecting up second hand nappies and ones that are factory seconds but still perfectly usable! They are willing to donate them to us for Baby Pack which is fantastic! With this help and the donations from Tommee Tippee we will be able to help give so many more babies a good start in life - aren't people wonderful! :0) I have been knitting some more matching baby sets (cardigans, hats and shoes) in lovely bright colours for baby pack so hopefully we can have a nice fundraiser during the next few weeks so I can get all of this shipped over asap.

The Kelty meeting starts on Monday afternoon at 1pm in the Community Centre - I will let you all know how that goes!

I have now added out details on to the Stitch N Bitch site. It seems to be areally great Forum full of lots of happy knitters - they had a charity knitting section and one for groups so I have added our details in both categories - I think next step will be to contact Simply Knitting and Knitting magazines with our details as well - seems like every time I join something new we get a few more members which is great for us and even better for the charities we support!

I am going off down today to book us in to the local community centre for Monday Meetings (1pm to 3pm in Kelty Community Centre from 23rd July) and I will get in touch with the church in Dunfermline and the Volunteer Centre in Kirkcaldy to arrange days and times with them.

Hopefully we will have a very productive summer!

I have to go in to Dunfermline tomorrow to the Sewing Machine Centre to buy some more tartan knit in ribbon for a bonnet I had ordered the other day. I am also going to look for a pattern for a Man's Tammy hat as an old neighbour wants one for her nephew to wear to work. There are not an awful lot of LYS around here - I normally go to the lady at Kinross Market as her prices are good and she orders things in for me if she doesn't have them. The other local stores are Pins and Needles in Lochgelly which is like a Tardis - very small shop but packed floor to ceiling with all sorts of lovely yarn and associated items. The Sewing Machine Centre in Dunfermline which is more expensive but has all sorts of crafty things in it over two floors - well worth a visit if you are in the area. Apart from that there aren't really any good stores here.

Why not post on site and let us all know what is available in your area? Which are your favourites and which would be worth a visit if any of us were visiting your area? I know that the first thing I do when we go on holiday is check out the LYS to see what they have! :0)

More great news today - a lovely lady called Joan from the Isle of Harris has very kindly offered to send us some oddments of yarn she has lying around. Family commitments will not allow her time to knit for us at the moment (we will be here when you find the time Joan don't worry!). But she very thoughtfully offered us her spare yarn to use in the meantime! Thank you so much Joan - you are a real star! :-)

Been really busy since last night - just finished an all white unisex baby set for the duaghter's mother - in - law (her friend from work is expecting but they don't know aht it is to be yet) I did a cardigan, beanie hat and shoes for her with wee teddy bear buttons. Then I got an order on e-bay for three lacey bonnets so I have finished two and just away to do the third one. I also got an order for two aran cardis and matching bobble hats in aran for twin baby boys in Port Glasgow - good job I did lots of scarves for Loving Hands when I was on holiday last week or I would be feeling I was neglecting that in favour of orders! :0)

It would be lovely if you could all post in the comments list what you are working on at the moment - whether it be for charity or for yourselves - I am sure everyone would love to see what you are doing!

Secret Pal

Hi Guys!

I have just signed up for the next Secret Pal - this round will be secet pal 11 - it is a brilliant scheme which joins together knitters and crocheters from all over the world. You get assigned a secret pal and you send gifts to them and you are also assigned another one who sends gifts to you. You have to have a Blog and a secret e-mail address as your identity is kept secret from the other person till reveal day. I have had some lovely pals in the past and received some really great gifts from all over the place! I will keep you all posted as to how it goes. If you want to get involved google secret pal 11 and join up - you have till the 31st July to get involved in this round and all the rules are explained on the site!

UK Handknitters

Hello Everyone!

I have just joined UK Handknitters Yahoo group so hopefully we might attract some new members from the wonderful people who are part of that group. They are all very keen knitters and have a wealth of skills and knowledge that would be great for hekping us out here! If any of you UK Handknitters members have logged on to take a peek at this Blog - WELCOME!

I will add a few more photos from the knitathon today - the others came out really well I thought!

I had a lovely lady e-mailed me yesterday who had seen the article about the knitathon in the local newsletter she has been busily knitting baby cardigans ever since and has a load to hand in - Thank you Rose Kelly - you are a star! Keep knitting though we need all the things we can get! :0)

As you can see the knitathon was attended by all ages and both sexes! We do not discrimate! (Hats off to Kaffe Fassett and Sasha Kagan!).

A bit off topic here - but I am sitting today nursing a broken bug toe! Last night I tripped over our 10 stone Irish Setter in the dark and ended up in Casualty! Ouch! The only good thing is that now the kids are doing everything for me and I can sit here and do my e-mails and blog and then spend the rest of the day KNITTING!!!!

Another Newbie!

Today we welcome another newbie on board - Beatrice Lea is on holiday at the moment and looking to join us as a charity knitter - welcome on board Beatrice! We are delighted to have you!

The Lion Brand website is doing very well attracting new members to the group - thank you Lion Brand!

One of our local members Margaret has been ever so busy knitting 'boobs' for the breastfeeding project and now has over 2 dozen waiting in the wings to be added to the box for Tommee Tippee. I am really looking forward to going down to Newcaslte to meet up with Avril and the midwives - it is great to see where things are going!

I will try to get the hang of adding photos to these posts as I have already got quite a few really good ones from the Knitathon in June. As you will see I have cracked it! There is a box of 'boobs' sitting waiting to be bagged up!

The second one shows some of the wonderful brightly coloured baby sets I made for Africa for the Baby Pack project - remeber if you are knitting for this one don't knit all in white as this is the colour of mourning over there! The other one is a mountain of knitted scarves, boobs, squares and baby things which were done for the Knitathon - we had hundreds of things made in advance of the 3 day event so there were lots of packages to be sent off to the various charities after that!

Now that I have figured it out I will keep posting photos as we go along to let you see how we are all doing!

Hello Again!

Great news! The Lion Brand yarns company have now got a link on their charity finder web pages to Loving Hands and it is working a charm! (Perhaps because we are the only charity knitting group listed in the UK at the moment!) :0)

Since last night I have had two new members e-mailed wanting to join up so let me say a big welcome to Margaret from Morayshire and Beryl from Anglesey. We are delighted to have you on board ladies - thanks for volunteering and we look forward to having you with us for a very long time to come!

Another bit of fun news for you all is that I have been asked to go down to England to meet up with the executives from Tommee Tippee and the midwives who set up the knitted breasts for breastfeeding initiative. I will be going down with the Press Officers from Sky Television in Dunfermline (where I work) and when I go I will take with me all the breasts we have ready by then - I have about three dozen done at the moment so the more the merrier before we go! It will be a great photo opportunity and a chance to publicise Loving Hands! (It will also give me a chance to meet with Avril Deane and thank her personally for getting Tommee Tippee involved) :0-) We are going down sometime in July - watch this space for more details!

Loving Hands

Welcome to the newly formed Loving Hands charity knitting and crochet group. We were formed because of the huge success of the Volunteer Centre Fife's 24 hour charity knitathon. Following on from that we did not want to simply go back to knitting or crocheting all alone and trying to find places to take out work. Now we are in the process of setting up groups accross Fife (in Kelty, Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy to begin with) and welcoming new crafters and like minded people to join from a distance as well!

We will be meeting regularly to have a knit and natter, choose the charities we are going to knit for and fundraise to pay for postage etc.

The charities we are knitting for right now are:-

The Baby Pack Project - which makes up packs of baby essentials to give to new mums in the Kwa Zulu Natal area of South Africa - they were taking their babies home naked and wrapped in old newspapers before this wonderful project began!

Burundi Bears - this is a scheme where knitters knit little bears to a set pattern and they are labelled and then sold for £1 each by schoolchildren in this country. Each £1 pays for 4 bricks in new schools being built in the Burundi District of South Africa - the schools there were all destroyed during the fighting.

Blythswood Care - a christian charity based in Scotland which takes warm clothing, blankets and other essentials out to places like Albania and Croatia.

The other thing we are doing is knitting 'boobs' which are used to teach new mums how to breastfeed in UK hospitals and clinics. This was an initiative we were drawn into by Tommee Tippee who very kindly donated a large box of cotton nappies and wraps (for the Baby Pack Project) in exchange for us knitting them a few dozen of these knitted breasts.

As you can see they are all very good charities and worth knitting for. We are also accepting donations of yarns, patterns, knitting needles, toy stuffing, baby clothes, blankets, towels, baby soap etc as well as contributions towards posting.

We are in the process of applying to be added to the national register of charities which will give us the right to apply for grants and other funding and also make it easier to fundraise.
